Changes in Employment Settings for PhD Psychologists: 1973, 1983, 1993, 1997
Between 1973 and 1997, the decline in the proportion of psychologists in academic settings and the increase in business/industry were the result of a large increase in psychologists in the health service provider subfields (clinical, counseling, school) coupled with increasing opportunities for work in for profit and business settings. That is, private and group practice were folded into the business category by those responsible for collecting these data, thereby substantially boosting numbers in these settings.
