APA Comments on Draft Strategic Plan of National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases

By Pat Kobor

On behalf of APA, Executive Director for Science Steven Breckler submitted comments on the draft long-range strategic plan of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) on January 15, 2010. Here are the major points of APA’s comments:

“On behalf of the American Psychological Association, I am pleased to comment on the sections of the plan related to behavioral and biopsychosocial research …NIAMS partnerships with [the National Institute on Aging], [the National Institute of Nursing Research] and [the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research ] have been and will continue to be important in the development of interventions to support the maintenance of health behavior change. The interests of NIAMS in advancing research on quality of life, patient-reported outcome measures, and the stigma of disfigurement are gratefully acknowledged. APA notes the interest of NIAMS in expanding research on enhancing immune function at all stages of human development, and suggests that behavioral research be considered, given the association between psychosocial stress and impaired wound healing…APA also acknowledges the welcome participation of NIAMS in the new NIH OppNet initiative to expand directions for basic behavioral and social sciences research… “
