NCWGE: Girls @ the Margin

The National Coalition on Women and Girls in Education (NCWGE) convened its monthly meeting on December 1, 2010. Coalition members representing the American Association of University Women, American Civil Liberties Union, American Federation of Teachers, Association for Gender Equity Leadership in Education, Association for Women in Science, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts of the USA, Feminist Majority Foundation, National Organization of Women, National Women’s Law Center and the Society of Women Engineers, and APA’s Women’s Programs Office shared current activities and updates on legislation related to equal rights for women and girls in education.  For more information, please visit the NCWGE website.

Additionally, coalition members were invited to a Girls @ the Margin Alliance meeting on December 13th for a presentation and discussion on the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s (OJJDP) strategies to address girls in the juvenile justice system.   Presenters Catherine Pierce (OJJDP Senior Advisor to the Administrator), Marlene Beckman (Senior Program Analyst , Justice Systems Division, Office of Research and Evaluation, National Institute of Justice), and Lawanda Ravoira (Director, National Council on Crime and Delinquency Center for Girls and Young Women) discussed the newly established OJJDP National Girls Institute. Participants were invited to provide comments and feedback on the Institute’s mission, goals and priorities, and to help to identify possible partners for future collaboration.
