Senate introduces student nondiscrimination legislation
Efforts are moving forward in the Senate to provide protection in schools against discrimination related to students’ actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity
In May, Senator Al Franken (D-MN) introduced the Student Nondiscrimination Act of 2010 (SNDA), S. 3390, with support from APA. With a House companion bill introduced earlier in 2010 by Representative Jared Polis (D-CO), the bill would prohibit discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity in the public school system. APA’s support of the measure was solicited by Senator Franken’s office ahead of its introduction, and PI-GRO worked with Division 16 and the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns in its response to this request. PI-GRO will continue to advocate for SNDA in the House and Senate.
