Senator attacks social and behavioral sciences at NSF
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) released "The National Science Foundation: Under the Microscope," decrying trivial research and calling for the elimination of NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences
On May 26, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) released a report from his office, "The National Science Foundation: Under the Microscope," decrying what he considers trivial research funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and calling for the elimination of NSF’s Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE). APA and the larger scientific community immediately responded by pointing out a number of factual inaccuracies in the report and noting important findings from SBE-funded research. In advance of an upcoming June 2 oversight hearing on SBE in the House, APA is working with individual scientists, science coalition members, the media, and Members of Congress and their staff to better educate policymakers and the general public about the importance of the behavioral and social sciences.
