Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reintroduced in U.S. Senate, House

On Jan. 22, 2013, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisc., introduced bills to reauthorize VAWA (S. 47/H.R. 11). These bills include APA-supported public health provisions to reauthorize and strengthen the health care system’s identification, assessment and response to violence, as well as provisions to protect vulnerable populations, including Native women, immigrants and LGBT individuals. APA is urging Congress to support an expedient and comprehensive reauthorization of VAWA programs to ensure that all survivors of intimate partner violence, including those from vulnerable populations, receive the services and supports necessary for optimal health and well-being.
