APA member speaks at conference on community support for veterans
PI-GRO facilitated the participation of APA member Abigail Gewirtz, PhD, University of Minnesota and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, in a Conference on Engaging Community Support for Veterans on April 20, 2012. The Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, in cooperation with Representative Ann Marie Buerkle (R-NY), Chair of the House Veterans Affairs Health Subcommittee sponsored the event. Dr. Gewirtz highlighted some of the key challenges facing military families and discussed her work in promoting resilience and effective parenting in military families. She is principal investigator on a National Institute of Drug Abuse-funded randomized controlled trial to develop and test a web-enhanced parenting program for National Guard families. The conference panel on which she served addressed community reintegration and wellness issues. Other panelists included Lieutenant Colonel MaryJo Timpano, Hancock Field Joint Health and Wellness Center; Ms. Lauren Love, Syracuse VA Medical Center; and Chaplain Colonel Eric Olsen, U.S. Army National Guard.
