APA participates in federal consultation with LGBT community around HIV/AIDS

PI-GRO staff was invited to a special Department of Health and Human Services Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community Consultation, held on March 17-18, 2011.  The President’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) charges HHS to work with leaders from national LGBT organizations to develop strategies that re-envision HIV prevention in a broader social context of health promotion and health equity.  The meeting brought these leaders together with professional researchers, policy makers, advocates and government officials working across sectors in HIV/AIDS policy and public health.  PI-GRO highlighted policy issues informed by Public Interest Directorate programmatic priorities, such as integration of mental and behavioral health, HIV/AIDS prevention and care services, and involvement of schools in supporting healthy behaviors among LGBT youth.  Implementation of the NHAS offers an opportunity to address these important priorities
