Board of Convention Affairs (BCA): 2008 Annual Report

The Board of Convention Affairs held two meetings in 2008 – March 27-29, 2008, and October 24-26, 2008.  Initial planning for the 2009 plenary sessions at the annual convention was implemented by the Central Programming Working Group, which met with the Board of Convention Affairs in October.

BCA actions on convention policy during 2008 are noted below.

  1. Approved participant guidelines for developing balanced presentations by avoiding bias in language for inclusion in the “Call for Programs”.

  2. Recommended to the Board of Directors that the 2012 Convention be held in Orlando, Florida from Thursday, August 2, through Sunday, August 5, 2012; that the 2016 Convention be held in Denver, Colorado from Thursday, August 4 through Sunday, August 7, 2016, and that the 2017 Convention be held in Washington, DC from Thursday, August 3 through Sunday, August 6, 2017.

Discussions on improving the convention were scheduled during a “retreat” at the March meeting.  Ideas discussed included the following:

  • scheduling more skilled-based sessions with defined learning objectives

  • identify each session into a broad category, such as E&T, practice, science, public interest

  • obtain guidance on purpose of convention, i.e., membership benefit or revenue producer

In 2008, the Board consisted of five women and one man.  Ethnically, there were two Asian members, one Multiracial member, one African American member, one Latina member, and one Caucasian member on the Board.  BCA did not have board specific diversity training during 2008 but keeps in mind and responds to the needs of all diverse groups when planning the annual convention.
